DCEU’s Birds of Prey film is progressing forward and has now received its working title. In Production Weekly the upcoming DC superteam film will be in prodcution under the working title “Fox Force Five”.
If the name of this title rings a bell it should because it is a reference to the fictional television pilot from Quentin Tarantino’s classic 1994 film Pulp Fiction. The pilot series that starred Uma Thurman’s character as part of a five-woman crimefighting team going on missions all over the world.
Another interesting tidbit is that the working title could also hint at the final lineup for the Gotham City-based ensemble: A five-member squad for the film would theoretically include Barbara Gordon, Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya, and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. All five characters had been rumored to be included in the film, as well as Cassandra Cain. There has not been an official lineup announcement from Warner Bros.
Birds Of Prey is directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodgson and is set to go into production in January of 2019.
The mystery may slowly begin to being solved when it comes to the cast of the Cathy Yan directed Birds of Prey film. We already know that Margot Robbie will reprise her role of Harley Quinn and now we may have a clue as to who will be the Huntress.
Francesca Ruscio an up and coming Italian-American actress sent out a series of Tweets which led to speculation that she may have landed the role of Helena Bertinelli aka The Huntress. In the first Tweet it is worded in a way which suggests she’s actually going to play the character. Add to it that it was liked by Margot Robbie only heightened up the rumor mill.
But that may just be that, a rumor mill as the tweet seems more of a campaign than a casting.
In comes the next tweet which again seems more of a campaign.
Now its not for sure known which is which, a campaign or a casting. But if this is a public campaign, well we saw what happened with Tyrese Gibson publicly campaigning to be John Stewart in the Green Lantern Corps film. Wait..we don’t know just yet. i guess we shall see with both.
It seems as if we may know who the bad guy will be for the upcoming Cathy Yan directed “Birds Of Prey” film. This go round we will possibly be getting the classic Batman villain, The Black Mask. This information is coming from The Wrap.
A possible plot for the film is that Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Black Canary, Huntress and others will come together to save Cassandra Cain from the clutches of a crime boss, and it now looks like said crime boss is going to be Roman Sionis aka Black Mask.
Another rumor that surfaced is that Cassandra’s father David would be the antagonist for this movie. Now how that plays into Black Mask is not yet known. But it is for sure that the classic villain will be making his way from video games and animated movies to a live action film.
Here is an update to the recent article about Cathy Yan being tapped to helm the upcoming “Birds Of Prey” based film and why it subsequently pushed back other films such as the sequel to Suicide Squad, Gotham City Sirens and the Harley Quinn and Joker spinoff film.
According to Variety’s Justin Kroll, the execs where so impressed with screenwriter Christina Hodson’s script that Birds of Prey moved up many notches. With Hodson also penning the script for Batgirl, they felt it was a PERFECT way to introduce the character to the film world.
Check out on of the tweets from Kroll below
What do you think of this move? Do you think its a great introduction? Should it have been done with the solo Batman film? Let us know your thoughts.
It was announced earlier today that Cathy Yan has been tapped by Warner Bros and DC Entertainment to direct the next film within the DCEU, Birds Of Prey. Now Birds of Prey is not the official title, however the film is said to be based off of that and is a “girl gang film”. It needs to be noted that no official deal is in place just yet, but the Trade is confident in assuming that Yan will land the gig, thus making her “the first female Asian director ever tapped to direct a superhero film.” This is a MAJOR DEAL once it is finalized.
Margot Robbie is picking up her baseball bat and mallet once again as Harley Quinn for the film, but it remains to be seen if she’ll be joined by the likes of Black Canary, Batgirl and Huntress. It is known that “the main characters and most of the creative braintrust are female.”
The script was written by Christina Hodson, who we recently found out was also hired to pen the Batgirl movie.
Birds of Prey (or whatever it winds up being called) is expected to commence production by year’s end or early 2019. Now other films that were in talks, Harley Quinn Vs The Joker, Gotham City Sirens as well as a direct Suicide Squad sequel are all supposedly still in the works, but have now been put on the backburner.
