After it was announced back in early January that Scott Derrickson would stepping aside from directing DOCTOR STRANGE INTO THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS due to creative differences with Marvel Studios many were left wonder who would potentially take hold of the reigns and give the sorcerer supreme’s sequel the horror element it deserves.
Well me now have that answer as it is being reported by VARIETY that Sam Raimi (SPIDER-MAN, SPIDER-MAN 2 & SPIDER-MAN 3) is currently in talks to take up the directorial role. Derrickson is set to remain on as an executive producer which means that Raimi,is going to need to be caught up to speed before the film’s scheduled production start date in May.
Marvel had no comment.
One of the most highly anticipated films of phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was the long awaited sequel to DOCTOR STRANGE with DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS. Not only was its star Benedict Cumberbatch returning as the sorcerer supreme but its director Scott Derrickson was also set to once again take the helm.
Well one part of that no longer seems to be the case. According to a new report from Variety, Scott Derrickson has officially departed the project as a director. Derrickson, however, will remain a producer on the film.
“Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences,” Marvel said in a statement to Variety, adding, “We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.”
According to the report, Marvel Studios is already searching for a replacement director, as filming on the project is expected to begin in May.
Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
