“And then there were none”. Exactly a month after the launch of its second season on Netflix, Marvel’s The Punisher has officially been cancelled along with  Jessica Jones to officially end the run of all of the Marvel-Netflix originals. The completed third season of  Jessica Jones starring Krysten Ritter will still air later in the year but will be put on ice for good after that.

In speaking with Deadline, Netflix confirmed, “Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix”. They further added, “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come,”

“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones….We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others”.

“We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

The writings were on the wall with the cancellations of Iron Fist, Luke Cage and even more recently Daredevil only a few short weeks after its third season arrived in January. It also comes along with the announcement that there would not be a follow-up for the limited series The Defenders.

Bernthal took to Instagram this morning to offer a cryptic farewell of sorts:

In a normal situation many would be BEYOND excited to find out when this will arrive for the viewing audience. But at the same time after seeing what has happened with Luke Cage, Iron Fist and now Daredevil  being cancelled it’s a bit difficult to not have a bit of sorrow blended with excitement.

Nonetheless Marvel has now officially announced that The Punisher season 2 will stream next month for 13 all-new episodes, though there is no specific date. Jon Bernthal will reprise the role of Frank Castle, a former marine who after surviving the brutal murder of his entire family, returns to exact revenge and punish all of those responsible. Bernthal will be be joined by fellow season 1 returnees Ben Barnes (Billy Russo), Amber Rose Revah (Dinah Madani), and Jason R. Moore (Curtis Hoyle). New cast additions to this season include Josh Stewart as John Pilgrim, Floriana Lima as Krista Dumont, and Giorgia Whigham as Amy Bendix.

‘The Punisher’ Adds More Talent Heading into its Second Season

The first season of Marvel’s The Punisher garnered rave reviews. The reviews were so strong and positive that it was renewed for a second season close to a week after its initial release on Netflix.

Now as the story of former Marine turned vigilante, Frank Castle heads into its sophomore season, more talent is being added to the cast. The show stars Jon Bernthal and includes Ben Barnes as Billy Russo, Amber Rose Revah as Dinah Madani, and Jason R. Moore as Curtis Hoyle returning from season 1. Jo

Being added to the cast as series regulars are Shooter actor Josh Stewart will play John Pilgrim, “a man whose calm exterior belies a ruthless interior. Despite having left behind a life of violence, circumstances will force him to use his old skills and bring him into Frank Castle’s world.” Meanwhile, Supergirl‘s Floriana Lima will portray Krista Dumont, “a smart, compassionate, and driven psychotherapist for military veterans.” (that explains why her and Danvers broke up in Supergirl….that and kids) Last but not least, Giorgia Whigham (Scream) will play Amy Bendix, “a street-smart grifter with a mysterious past.”

As of now, Bendix is the only established Marvel Comics character of the three, and a very minor one at that. It seems that this version of Bendix will be relatively different from the comics. .

Well this year is getting a lot more exciting and the release of poster helps out A LOT.

The official poster for the upcoming Netflix series “The Punisher”  starring Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle been released and it changes what many of us thought.  We were under the impression that at first it would be released next year in 2018 but this poster shows that it is coming in 2017.

Now this would change the landscape because we just found out the release date for Marvel’s The Defenders which is set to come out this year in August.  Now the question is do we get it close to the end of the year or immediately after the Defenders.
